Early French Aviator M. Pigout Wearing A Wrist Altimeter
** SOLD **
An extremeley rare and collectable early Royal Flying Corp 'wrist altimeter'.
By F.E. Becker & Co, London. Interestingly the retailer is also marked on the dial -- W & J George, Hatton Wall.
Most importantly it has a clear Royal Flying Corp arrow.
The instrument has a wonderful patina and is completely original and untouched. The fine silvered dial is perfect, with clear pointer and beveled glass. The case retains the original lacquer -- this has attained a deep golden colour.
Probably the finest point is that the correct large leather strap is in place, and again in excellent supple patinated condition.
In many ways this fine altimeter is rarer than a cockpit instrument from the same period, due to its original use.
The fact that a Royal Flying Corp pilot probably had it strapped over his leather coat or gauntlet, almost one hundred years ago makes it a privilege to handle.
A fine investment, especially considering the WW1 centenary is fast approaching.
