A very rare, and highly collectable airspeed instrument, as fitted to the pioneering Messerschmitt Me 163 'Comet' aircraft.
This ASI is in excellent original condition, showing signs of being fitted to a panel in the past. The dial, glass and twin pointers are very clear. This version has a black bakelite case.
Most importantly the 'Fl' number is still showing on the rear -- Fl 22241. Displaying up to 1000 Km/h, these were only fitted to pioneering German jet aircraft towards the end of WW2. Interestingly the first pointer would register to 400 Km/h - the second then taking over to 1000 Km/h if the situation arose....!
The Me 163 was the worlds first, and consequently, only rocket powered fighter aircraft produced.
In 1944 Messerschmitt test pilot Rudy Opitz reached a speed of 1,123 Km/h (approx 800 Mph)
The aircraft was not a success, claiming only a handful of enemy 'kills'.
